Knifed o'er a Pair of Jordans!?

I guess it makes sense that I bought this disc in a shit-bedecked chicken coup out near Lancaster PA, as the Brothers Jordan hail for nearby Schuylkill County PA, and as anyone who has ever spent a nickel of time out in that area know, it’s a family affair.

The Jordans were a popular regional act from the inception of their first single in 54’ all the way till their disbandment in 1986; quite a long stretch for a band that never made it out of their own county. Be that as it may, the Brothers still have quite a following amongst the locals, who spend their youth pawin and pettin the local trim at their capacity gigs, strollin to the cool sounds of Basin Street Rumble, as if any of those youths had ever seen the business end of a stiletto out there in Amish county. Man, times sure have changed.

Find your way out to Lancaster now and you are just as likely to get iced by a 'Crip' or buy cocaine from a Mennonite than to see even a stitch of unmolested, verdant farmland, but that’s progress for you. Maybe now Basin Street Rumble can finally live up to it’s name. As for me, I personally think the flip, 'Sloe Gin' is cooler, but when it's six of one, half-dozen of the other, you gotta go with name recognition.

Ishi's Brain - In Search of America's Last Wild Indian

"Touted in his day as "the last wild Indian," Ishi, of the Northern Californian Yahi people, survived by adapting to a life housed within a San Francisco anthropological museum, where spectators paid to see him make arrowheads, until he died in 1916. Under 1990s repatriation laws, a group of Maidu Indians from the Sierra Nevada region sought to reclaim Ishi's ashes, buried in a San Francisco cemetery, but a rumor persisted that Ishi's brain had been removed during autopsy, pickled, and was still hidden somewhere. Duke University anthropologist Starn searched for the brain and here offers an unlikely narrative, informative and politicized, with easy-to-read, much-needed thumbnail histories of the Indian Wars. (As Starn notes, California Gold Rush atrocities against Native Americans are so recent that people remember them firsthand from their grandparents.) One of Starn's main accusations is that the widow of the important, early anthropologist Alfred Kroeber first made Ishi's story famous through "writerly liberties" as well as "careless research and made-up dramatic effects." Starn himself makes his own feelings and impressions central to the story, allowing himself to tell us, for example, that he "fell asleep at midnight with the motel swimming pool's blue floodlights glowing through the curtains like the beams of an alien spaceship." His search takes him from the University of Berkeley to the Cornucopia Restaurant in Oroville, Calif., to the Repatriation Office and "wet collection" in the Smithsonian Museum of National History, to an Ancestral Gathering at Mount Lassen National Park, to "Grizzly Bear's Hiding Place." For some readers, Starn-as-protagonist will ground this intellectual mystery, while others will find him distracting. But on the whole, the book satisfies as a quick review of sordid chapters in the nation's history, and a genuinely compelling investigation of how one culture's attempt to dominate another can take bizarre, persistent forms."

Been in dereliction of my internet duties w/ regards to bloggin’ on account of my pushin’ the new Brimstones single (Which you should buy, if for no other reason than to lampoon it on yer own damned blog).

Short of being extreamly busy, I’m pleased to report that part of my absence is due to my acquiring and subsequently sorting through a massive collection of rare Doo-Wop 45’s. Hands down the best private score I’ve had in a decade. Needless to say, I’ve been up to my eyeballs in vocal street-corner prowess...which brings us to the Tifano’s

As the first release on Jimmie Newton’s Tifco label (Run outta Tifton, Georgia) ‘Louisiana’ sets the tone on this vocal monster. While ‘Raining’ is the money side (Look for it on an up and coming BFTRB mix), ‘Louisiana’ sees the succinctly titled Tifanos doing their best Wilbur Harrison impersonation, kicking Kansas City to the curb in favor of the Gulf Coast and the ‘fair brown’ womens and the soul-food laden sideboard that comes along w/ it.

I know Doo-Wop might not be as accessible to the young folk as the rubric spawned by the British Invasion, but vocal music of the period is the very spirit of innovation; a street-wise sentiment that, unlike modern music, required actual talent to thrive in a competative market, rather than simply relying on ignorant thuggery to illustrate being street-savvy, you savvy?

What has four sides, three parts and will hand you your ass quicker than a bare-knuckle boxer? Answer: This friggin’ record!

This mysterious disc is actually one of about a dozen I scammed recently. All white label promos; most instrumental and all strange labels w/ even stranger acts accompanying. While not the only heavy hitter out of the box, Square and its equally hip flip, Davey’s Drag, are certainly vying for the top spot of my shit-shot agenda of recent acquisitions.

As for history on this disc, I have no idea. I’ve seen it appear on Rockabilly comps before, but I take exception to the fact that this is a Rockabilly track. There is an unfortunate tendency to drop every twangy riff square into the ‘A-billy’ bucket, but as us instrumental mentalist know, this kinda dreck is in a class (and category) all it’s own.

Now, if only we could confirm a part one and two (doubtful, but…).

HEAD -1968

"In this 1968 film, the Monkees valiantly attempted to deflate their own myth. The plot is, essentially, about demystification. Mickey Dolenz, Davy Jones, Peter Tork, and Mike Nesmith - with the aid of writer Jack Nicholson (the only credited author due to legalities)- tackle such topics as filmmaking, the media treatment and madness of the Vietnam War, Davy Jones' "way with the ladies", and, most importantly, commercialization. Each group member is presented in a unique light - in every case shattering the image that had been produced by the "media machine". The Monkees went out on a limb with this film by creating an almost surreal work with a loosely bound "plot". Their younger fans, unfortunately, simply missed the point. Because of the poor publicity of the film at the time of its release, older teenagers had no clue what "Head" was trying to say. As a result, its box office showing was disastrous. "Head" is more for the film enthusiast than the casual Monkees fan in some respects. The soundtrack does, however, feature some of the finest and most sophisticated music of the group's career. And yes, they DO play their own instruments on the tunes, but receive assistance in composing and performing from the likes of Neil Young, Stephen Stills, and Carole King."

Guess who turned 100 years young today?

"Frankenstein is a 1910 film made by Edison Studios that was written and directed by J. Searle Dawley. It was the first motion picture adaptation of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. The unbilled cast included Augustus Phillips as Dr. Frankenstein, Charles Ogle as the Monster, and Mary Fuller as the doctor's fiancée.

Shot in three days, it was filmed at the Edison Studios in the Bronx, New York City. Although some sources credit Thomas Edison as the producer, he in fact played no direct part in the activities of the motion picture company that bore his name.

For many years, this film was believed to be a lost film. In 1963, a plot description (reprinted above) and stills were discovered published in the March 15, 1910 issue of an old Edison film catalog, The Edison Kinetogram.

In the 1950s, a print of this film was purchased by a Wisconsin film collector, Alois F. Dettlaff, who did not realize its rarity until many years later. Its existence was first revealed in the mid-1970s. Although somewhat deteriorated, the film was in viewable condition, complete with titles and tints as seen in 1910. Dettlaff had a 35 mm preservation copy made by the George Eastman House in the late 1970s."
